How to Write a Resume That Wins Interviews

How to Write a Resume That Wins Interviews How to Write a Resume That Wins Interviews Recruiters only spend about six seconds reading your resume before they make a decision about your qualifications, which means you have very little time to catch and retain their attention. In my experience as a resume writer, I have noticed my clients making the same job-costing mistakes over and over. These mistakes are usually made in the professional profile, work experience, and professional development sections of their resumes. Here is my advice to help you avoid these mistakes - and make the most of your six secondsYour Professional ProfileYour professional profile is the first section of your resume that employers and recruiters read, so it is vital you instantly set yourself apart from the competition. Employers should be able to tell three things from reading your professional profileWho you are and what your areas of expertise areA good way to ensure your professional profile contains this information is to read job ads. Identify the areas of experience your target employers are looking for. If you have experience in those areas, mention that in your profile. The value you add to organizationsThe best way to conveyyour value is to showcase a couple of relevant accomplishments that will impress the employer. Why you are applying for that particular jobThink carefully about why this role appeals to you.Is it a step up from your current role? Does it grant access to a different sector? Does it give you the opportunity to work with a prestigious client kusine? Whateveryour reasons, express them in your professional profile. Employers want tosee you a truly interested in the role.YourWork ExperienceYourwork experienceshould form the bulk of your resume. This section will determine whether you get an interview invite or a rejection letter. There are four ways to stand out in this section of your resumeTailor your content for each positionYou shouldnt be using the same re sume for every job. When reading job ads, youshould notice each employer has its own unique needs, desired qualifications, etc. Your resume should be relevant to each employers unique situation.Paint a picture of what you have doneDont copy and pasteyour job descriptions. Instead, showcase what you have done, how you did it,and how you overcamechallengesalong the way. Be selective in what information youinclude. Details that are irrelevant to the job at handwill dilute the impact of your resume overall.Citeyour achievements in each position Employers want tosee you have a track record of success. The best way to demonstrate this is to mention relevant achievements for each job. I suggest using percentages, figures, and metrics to back up what you say with concrete value.Use engaging languageThe rolle reading your resume will have a limited attention span. If youwant to ensurethey read to the end of your resume, you need to use language that entices them to do so. Use active verbs ra ther than passiveonesfor maximum impact.Examples of strong active verbs include spearheaded, championed, administered, etc.Your Professional DevelopmentWhen reading the professional development section of your resume, employers want to learn aboutyour qualifications, training, courseworkthat will benefit the organization. In writing this section, keep these tips in mindBe selectiveOnly mention those courses and trainingsthat are relevant to the particular job you are applying for.Mention relevant qualifications you are studying towardIf you are currently studying toward a qualification the employer requires or desires, mention it in your resume. Include the date at which you anticipate earning the qualification.- At the end of the day, the purpose of your resume is to showcase the value you add to organizations. You do this by effectively explaining why you are applying for the particular job and highlighting your relevant achievements, experiences, and professional development.Shil pa Nayyar is the founder of expertcvconsultants, a full-service resume-writing company.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. This allows time for the situation to de-escalate and for you to compose yourself. If it is not possible to leave the room, slow down the pace of the conversation with a long pause and a deep breath.2. If possible, give yourself 5 minutes to go to the restroom, your office, or a quiet space without distractions. Be curious about what scares you. Name what you are afraid of. Disclosing Your Disability During Job Search

Disclosing Your Disability During Job Search Disclosing Your Disability During Job Search One in five Americans has a disability,  according to the U.S. Census Bureau. If you are part of this sizable group - whether your disability is a visible one or a hidden, invisible one - applying and interviewing for a job has an extra layer of complexity. You may wonder whether you are required to share information about your disability with potential employers. Requirements aside, is it beneficial or detrimental to share these details? Should you mention your disability on a job application or during a job interview? If so, when and how should you share the information? What should you say, and how much information should you disclose? These  are not simple questions to answer nor ones with a single correct response. If you have arthritis, cerebral palsy, depression, or any other mental or physical disability, here are some things to consider during your job search. What Does the Law Say? First, lets cover the legalities around employment for people with disabilities. The 1990  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does two important things,  according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). First, the law makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against qualified job applicants or employees with either mental or physical disabilities. Second, the ADA requires employers to make reasonable  accommodations for employees or candidates with disabilities. Sounds clear-cut, right? But note the phrases qualified applicants and reasonable accommodations, which add some ambiguity. (Get  more information on the ADA, including a definition of reasonable accommodations and details on what questions employers can - and cant - ask.) Legally, the ADA does not require candidates to disclose a disability to employers or potential employers. If you do not disclose, however, employers correspondingly will not have to make accommodations. 4 Considerations to Keep in Mind Its only reasonable that people with disabilities - despite these legal protections - may hesitate to share their disabilities. When faced with two qualified candidates, will employers opt to interview or hire the one without  disabilities because its just easier? Will a conversation about a disability overshadow talking about qualifications and job responsibilities? These are valid concerns. And, given the range of jobs and disabilities, its impossible to nail down one right answer to the question  about whether or not to disclose a disability during the application process. Nevertheless,  here are some things to mull over as you make your decision: 1. Will you need accommodations?  If youll need a wheelchair-friendly desk, a screen reader, flexible schedule, or any changes to the office layout or supplies, it may make sense to share these with potential employers during the application process. Being specific can be helpful. After all, you may very well know more than employers about whats required and the costs involved. Before putting in an application,  review the job description carefully  to make sure you will be able to do the core responsibilities and to get a sense of any specific accommodations that will help you do your job.     2.  Will not disclosing make the application process unexpectedly challenging?  In an essay for  The Guardian, James Gower points out that not being upfront about his disability makes answering common interview questions about  teamwork  and  challenges  impossible. If failing to share information about a disability will make answering interview questions harder, that may be a good sign that disclosing early on is the right path for you. Keep in mind that a disability can serve as an explanation for a  gap in work history, too. 3.  Does the employer have a disability-friendly stance?  As always,  researching a company  can be helpful. In this case, youll want to check to see whether the company has a record of supporting employees with disabilities - or not. Some signs of a disability-friendly company: photos and language on the website that welcome or acknowledge people  with disabilities, and evidence  of  connections with disability groups. Many companies have information in the career section of the company website offering to assist applicants. For example, “If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please contact us by emailing companycompanyemail.com.” or “If you need reasonable accommodations to search job postings or to apply for a position, please let us know by sending an email to companycompanyemail.com.” A quick online search can also be illuminating.     4. When to Disclose.  If you do feel it’s best to disclose details about your disability, you may be wondering what the best timing is. Again, theres no one right answer - but here are some things to keep in mind. Pre-interview:  If you have a visible disability, sharing the details pre-interview may be helpful. Thats especially true if youd prefer to keep the focus of the interview on your qualifications and work experience. You can quickly and simply set expectations (e.g., I use a wheelchair, so it would be helpful to meet in a room with a door thats wide enough to accommodate my chair) and put interviewers at ease. During the interview:  Employers are often eager for adaptive, flexible employees. In some ways, your strategies for living in a world that isnt necessarily tailored to meet your needs can highlight these qualities. Plus, if you think your interviewers are wondering about your disability - and how theyll have to adjust responsibilities or office layout -  it can be helpful to address those concerns, which interviewers cannot legally bring up themselves. After the interview:  If you landed a job, congratulations! Now, you may be wondering whether you should bring up your disability. If there are adaptations youll need and your work-life will be easier if employers are aware, this is a good time to bring it up. If you need a daily break to administer medication, for instance, giving a heads-up is more helpful than surprising your new employer on your first day.   The information contained in this article is not legal advice and is not a substitute for such advice. Youre Allowed to Quit Your Job for Selfish Reasons - The Muse

Youre Allowed to Quit Your Job for Selfish Reasons - The Muse Youre Allowed to Quit Your Job for Selfish Reasons In a perfect world, you could just walk away carefree from a crummy job. Well, technically, there would be no crummy jobs in a perfect world- but just go with me here. The real world, however, is never so simple. If your family depends on your income or the insurance coverage your job provides, kicking open the exit and rushing through in a blaze of righteous glory probably isn’t realistic for you. Or, maybe it’s not so much that others depend on you, but you’ve overheard your mom humble bragging about you or you’ve seen your significant other beam with pride when talking about the work you do. Or, maybe you’ve just busted your tail to climb the proverbial ladder, and you’re struggling with what it would mean if you forgo everything you’ve clamored for. As the person who carries my family’s insurance, I completely understand the “I can’t just quit,” mindset. But no matter what dynamics are at play, it’s still your life, your career, and your peace of mind on the line. If you want out of your current role and the only thing holding you back is guilt, you have permission to be at least a little selfish. That may bring to mind a dramatic scene, but putting yourself first doesn’t have to be this dramatic all-or-nothing situation. In fact, taking good care of yourself really isn’t selfish at all. When you’re at your best, you’re more productive at work and a better family member and friend in your personal life. If you’re still not convinced you can do it, keep reading for a few tips that’ll make it a little easier to swallow: 1. Avoid Assumptions Whether you’re assuming you can’t tell a loved one that you’re miserable for fear of disappointing them or assuming you’re stuck forever in a job you hate, you’re playing a dead-end game. Instead, ask yourself, “Do I really know this? If so, how do I know?” You may be surprised when you force yourself to qualify your assumptions. It looks like this: You tell yourself you’re stuck in your job because you need your paycheck to pay rent. But when you sit down and take a hard look at your budget, you realize that between your savings and picking shifts up at the coffee shop on the weekends, you could actually take three months off to find a new job. Another approach that can help you shake harmful assumptions is to ask yourself, “What would change if this isn’t true?” This allows you to at least entertain alternate scenarios. What would you do differently today if you didn’t need that paycheck for rent? Would you go back to school? Get a job in a different field? When you mull over what you could do if your assumptions are untrue, you get one step closer to going after what you really want. 2. Clue Your Loved Ones In If someone in your life’s deeply invested in your career, you may feel tempted to stay mum. You don’t want to cause your loved ones any embarrassment or disappointment. You certainly don’t want to upend their lives. Time for a reality check: Think of the person you love most. How would you feel if they were suffering and didn’t feel like they could tell you? Right. Give your people some credit. Just like It’s your job as a friend to support your loved ones when they need you, it’s their job to do the same for you. Let them do their job. Maybe they can only provide sympathy and moral support; that’s more than you had when you were pretending all was well and suffering in silence. They may also surprise you with an idea or insight you hadn’t considered, or even a professional contact. 3. Move Beyond All or Nothing When it comes to a crappy job, it’s easy to get stuck in the belief that you must either endure your current torment or quit and ruin your life (and the lives of your loved ones). It’s rare, though, that we truly only have two options; life is simply too complex. Changing your language and thought processes around such scenarios can certainly help. Try dropping qualifiers like “have to,” “always,” “never,” and substituting with “and.” “I have to stay in this mess of a job or I’m screwed because I lose my benefits” becomes, “I’m in a mess of a job and I need to keep my benefits.” It’s a subtle shift, but now you’ve moved away from “I have to do this or this” to recognizing what you need. From there, you can begin thinking about how you might be able to make a change while keeping the benefits you need. That might mean you consider other options outside of your department, but still within your company that you hadn’t previously thought about. Or it might mean you educate yourself about negotiating, particularly in regards to benefits, so you can consider a position with a new company without losing the coverage you need. It’s not my intent to minimize or over-simplify a work situation that may be truly terrible or the reasons why you feel you can’t just up and quit. Rather, I hope this offers some hope that even in a complicated situation, you do have the right to care about your own needs, and that if you can make some shifts in the way you think about and approach the situation, you may find workable solutions. Because when you’re happy, that’s good for everyone.

Job Seekers Do You Engage in Risky Internet Behavior

Job Seekers Do You Engage in Risky Internet Behavior Job Seekers Do You Engage in Risky Internet Behavior 6Spyware, adware, viruses, phishing scams, and job scams- if you’re engaging in risky Internet behavior, you’ll probably encounter at least one, and perhaps several of these nasty things.   Job scams are of particular interest to the team at , because our mission is to help job seekers  avoid  job scams by creating a safe space to search for legitimate telecommuting and flexible jobs.   So, if you’re searching for a job online, how can you stay safe and avoid risky Internet behaviors that place you in harm’s way?   As far back as 2006, the FBI warned people about the  dangers of job scams, work-from-home included. Ten  years later, the warning signs the FBI listed, and the advice it gave, are still very much applicable in today’s online job market.   The only difference? Today, scammers trap people in  even more sophisticated ways.   Is it possible that YOU engage in risky job search Internet behaviors that expose you to scams? Some of the most common risky Internet behaviors related to job searching include: Posting your entire resume online:  Too many details, like your home address or phone number, leave you open to scams. Providing personal information:  Before you’ve even been offered a job, scam employers will often ask for info like your bank account or credit card numbers, social security number, a scan of your driver’s license, or other sensitive data.   Taking jobs that seem easy:  If you want to make quick cash online, there are plenty of scammers waiting to take advantage of you. Moving money through wire transfers, reshipping products, assembling crafts- these are all  typical “easy money” scam jobs. Accepting job offers without an interview:  Scammers sometimes offer a job right up front, without any application process or screening interviews.   Accepting job offers from out of the blue:  Scammers also  contact people through LinkedIn  and other sites to offer them a job, even when they haven’t applied for one.   Not doing enough research on a company before taking a job:  Job seekers need to do a good amount of company research to determine whether they’re dealing with a legitimate or fake employer. Ignoring a “gut feeling” that something just isn’t right:  Logically, most of us are fairly good at detecting unusual situations or strange behavior. But when you’re searching from a job, you may ignore the signs that something is amiss because you  really  want/need a job.   To stay away from job scams, and be able to spot those that come your way, here are some quick tips: Know the latest job scams. On the blog, we have a whole section dedicated to news and information related to job scams. Check out our  Avoiding Job Scams  blog category to learn the latest job scams, such as  reshipping scams,  bogus Post Office jobs, and  seasonal or holiday job scams. Use the best keywords.   Don’t search  work-from-home or work-at-home jobs because those phrases are commonly used by scammers. Instead, use good  job search keywords  like telecommuting job, virtual job, and remote job, which are far more likely to be used by legitimate employers. Trust your research and your gut. Research each company extensively  before interviewing for a job or accepting an offer. And at any point along the way, if something seems too good to be true, or gives you pause, pay attention to those feelings and proceed with extreme caution. Use for a guaranteed scam-free job search. Our team of researchers screens every job and company before its  posted to our site to identify and remove scam jobs before our job seekers are exposed. Searching for a job on means you’ll find only  legitimate, professional-level listings. You’ll save time and won’t have to worry about job scams. Readers, have you been avoiding risky Internet behavior in your online job search? Do you think you’ve ever seen a job scam? Share your story in the comments section! Parents win lawsuit to evict son who refused to move out

Parents win lawsuit to evict son who refused to move out Parents win lawsuit to evict son who refused to move out As we grow up, we are encouraged to leave the nest of our family’s home. Some of us fly off on our own, some of us need a helpful push. For one 30-year-old man in upstate New York, it took getting sued by his parents for him to finally be persuaded to move out and leave the house. On Tuesday, Mark and Christina Rotondo successfully won a lawsuit to evict their son Michael from their home.“We have decided that you must leave this house immediately”Michael had been living with his parents for the past eight years without paying rent or helping with chores according to court documents, and the parents had finally had enough. “Michael, After a discussion with your Mother, we have decided that you must leave this house immediately,” reads the first eviction letter, dated February 2nd. “You have 14 days to vacate … We will take whatever actions are necessary to enforce this decision.”The message went unheeded. In a follow-up letter, the Rotondos tried sweetening the deal wi th money, offering to give Michael $1,100 to help with moving expenses. “There are jobs available even for those with a poor work history like you. Get one - you have to work!” the parents pleaded in a February 18 letter. In a later March letter, the parents even offered to help pay for Michael’s car repairs. The conflict finally went to court, and the judge sided with the parents, ordering an outline of the terms of eviction while allowing Michael to stay at home until an official eviction date is set.In his defense, Michael said that he was always planning on moving out - just not anytime soon. “I have money. I have income,” Michael told the New York Post. “I have plans to not stay with them anymore - just not today, just not in 30 days. I can’t imagine I’ll be there in three months.”Michael Rotondo is an extreme case, but he is not alone in staying put. He is part of the new trend of adult Millennials living at home with their families. Millennials are moving at historically low rates in the wake of a recession and  high student debt, the Pew Research Center found. In fact, nowadays, Millennials are more likely to live with their parents than with long-term partners. Some Millennials handle this reality with grace, choosing to help their parents out with rent or chores to make the situation easier. But Michael Rotondo’s refusal to leave is a case study of what happens when you grow too accustomed to the luxuries of home without wanting to deal with the realities of adulthood.

Article 5 of the United States Military Code of Conduct

Article 5 of the United States Military Code of Conduct Article 5 of the United States Military Code of Conduct When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause. (Article V) When questioned, a POW is required by the Geneva Conventions and the CoC and is permitted by the UCMJ, to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. Under the Geneva Conventions, the enemy has no right to try to force a POW to provide any additional information. However, it is unrealistic to expect a POW to remain confined for years reciting only name, rank, service number, and date of birth. There are many POW camp situations in which certain types of conversation with the enemy are permitted. For example, a POW is allowed, but not required by the CoC, the UCMJ, or the Geneva Conventions, to fill out a Geneva Conventions capture card, to write letters home and to communicate with captors on matters of camp administration and health and welfare. The senior POW is required to represent fellow POWs in matters of camp administration, health, welfare, and grievances. However, POWs must constantly bear in mind that the enemy has often viewed POWs as valuable sources of military information and propaganda that they can use to further their war effort. Accordingly, each POW must exercise great caution when completing a capture card, when engaging in authorized communication with the captor, and when writing letters. A POW must resist, avoid, or evade, even when physically and mentally coerced, all enemy efforts to secure statements or actions that may further the enemys cause. Examples of statements or actions POWs should resist include giving oral or written confessions; making propaganda recordings and broadcast appeals to other POWs to comply with improper captor demands; appealing for U.S. surrender or parole; engaging in self-criticisms; and providing oral or written statements or communications on behalf of the enemy or harmful to the United States, its allies, the Armed Forces, or other POWs. Captors have used POWs answers to questions of a personal nature, questionnaires, or personal history to create improper statements such as those listed above. A POW should recognize the enemy might use any confession or statement as part of a false accusation that the captive is a war criminal rather than a POW. Moreover, certain countries have made reservations to the Geneva Conventions (reference (g)) in which they assert that a war criminal conviction has the effect of depriving the convicted individual of POW status. These countries may assert that the POW is removed from protection under reference (g) and the right to repatriation is thus revoked until the individual serves a prison sentence. If a POW finds that, under intense coercion, he unwillingly or accidentally discloses unauthorized information, the Service member should attempt to recover and resist with a fresh line of mental defense. POW experience has shown that although enemy interrogation sessions may be harsh and cruel, it is usually possible to resist if there is a will to resist. The best way for a POW to keep faith with the United States, fellow POWs, and oneself is to provide the enemy with as little information as possible. What Military Personnel Need to Know Specifically, Service members should: Be familiar with the various aspects of the interrogation process, its phases, the procedures, methods, and techniques of interrogation, and the interrogators goals, strengths, and weaknesses.Understand that the Geneva Conventions and the CoC require a POW to disclose name, rank, service number, and date of birth when questioned. Understand that a POW must avoid answering further questions. A POW is encouraged to limit further disclosure by using resistance techniques such as claiming an inability to furnish additional information because of previous orders, poor memory, ignorance, or lack of comprehension. The POW may never voluntarily give the captor additional information but must resist doing so, even if it involves withstanding mental and physical duress. Understand that short of death; it is unlikely that a POW may prevent a skilled enemy interrogator, using all available psychological and physical methods of coercion, from obtaining some degree of compliance by the POW with captor demands. However, understand that if the interrogator takes the Service member past the point of maximum endurance, the POW must recover (bounce back) as quickly as possible and resist each successive captor exploitation effort to the utmost. How to build your tribe and make friends after 30

How to build your tribe and make friends after 30 How to build your tribe and make friends after 30 With all the ways there are to  connect  in this day and age, the art of making friends continues to elude the best of us. How does one make friends in a big city? As an adult? As we transition from the exuberance of youthful exploration to the  approach of middle age, the days of effortlessly making friends and casually meeting up can seem like a distant memory. Life suddenly has more priorities, and obligations clog up our schedules. We too  have changed â€" expecting more from our plans and the people we choose to spend our time with.If you have yet to lock in your B.F.F. good luck finding one now. At best you’ll find a go-to friend for a night of drinking and another for brunch. Despite the dwindling opportunities, possibilities still exist. If you’re approaching or well acquainted with your 30s, here are some new ways to build your tribe and make new friends:Meet your neighbors“With the real estate market at its high, buildings in highly dense urban areas have to be extra c reative to stay competitive,” says Nikita Subbotin, CEO Co-founder,  Riseio Smart Building Solutions.  â€œI used to live in an apartment building that was constantly organizing different events for their residents. From Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley trips to sushi classes and rooftop happy hours. Meeting your neighbors is not only convenient  but also smart. Your neighbors most likely come from a similar socio-economic background which  makes it easy for you to relate. In fact, I met my co-founder at the building grand opening party.”“When I was apartment hunting,” says Arianna O’Dell of  BoardVitals, “if I knew the  apartment wouldn’t work out, I told the tenant ‘I don’t think this apartment  is for me, but you seem really fun â€" we should hang out!’ Two years later,  I still keep in touch with this group of  friends.”Use Instagram“I actually use the power of Instagram to  make  new  friends  when I travel to new  cities,” says photographer  CJ Johnson.  â€ œIf they have interesting Instagram feeds or we’re already “online”  friends, I usually try to meet up with them in person. We typically meet in a public place and snap pics together. It’s a great icebreaker and a fun way to meet new people. I’ve made a lot of great  friends  that way.”Smile, someone is watching“Smile, you are being watched!” says Paulo Amara, a Marketing Consultant at  www.treasurefy.com. “Show the world that it’s fun to  be around you. When people see me smiling, they often  assume amazing things about me. I’ve heard hilarious first impressions from  new  friends.”Go without a phone“To build meaningful relationships in San Francisco, nothing beats hiking  without a cell phone signal,” says  Sabrina Attinenza,  CEO of Qurious. “I follow one rule: I always hike with at least 1  person I want to get to know better. Without phones to distract us, we’re  forced to get to know each other. This constraint leads to real  conversation.”“ The first 30 minutes of hiking is usually artificial  conversation about work, hobbies, background, and food. Then, things get  interesting. We run out of artificial topics. We get real: what  makes  us  tick, what we love and what we hate, our crazy dreams, and our weird  habits. I follow this simple rule because it works. And it works because  we’re no longer hiding behind our phones, our Facebook profiles, our  Instagram photos, or any other digital facade.”Go alone (but with your phone this time)“Doing things alone  makes  a lot of people uncomfortable, but in a new  city, force yourself to embrace it,” says Brand Marketing Strategist at  Greenvelope.com  Alex Kelsey.“Sign up for a kayaking class, watch the football game at your local bar instead of at home - engaging in your hobbies and interests solo increases the odds that you’ll meet people whom you share common interests with, which is a great start to  making  new  friends.”Get physical“I have traveled a l ot for work for months at a time,” says  Maritza Huerta. “In the past 3 years I  have lived in Denver, Aspen, DC, and now New York.I sign up for social sports leagues, such as Zog Sports.  You automatically  get introduced to new people (teammates) and you all share a common  interest (sports). It’s an easy and fun way to create a bond with new  people.”Volunteer or start something“Over the past decade I’ve lived in London, Cambridge, Beijing, Shanghai and  regularly traveled to other  major  cities  such as Bangkok,” says  Stephen Parkes, CEO of  Go Enrol.“In Beijing, I organized a monthly networking event. In Shanghai,  it was a pub-quiz and regular Sunday brunch. In London and Cambridge,  it has been about getting involved in the Start-up scene and organizing  Startup Weekends at Judge Business School.  I’ve found that getting involved in  communities is key to  making  serious long-term friendships and business  connections.”“Years ago, I made a new friend at the National Press Club and began volunteering on a committee,” says  Social Driver  co-founder  Anthony Shop. “This led to me becoming a committee chair and eventually being elected to our board of governors. In another case, I enjoyed chatting with a friend from business school about the amazing nonprofit he runs. So I volunteered, and ended up serving as chairman of his advisory board.”“There’s no shortage of great people to meet and ways you can help them. If you focus on what you can do for others, then it’s difficult to make a mistake.”Group chat“I’ve been a Beijing expat for one year,” says Monica Weintrab of  www.newlifeesl.com. “Compared to my small town China expat life, of 3 years,  making  friends  in Beijing has been more difficult, but certainly more accessible.”“Social apps are incredible for  making  friends. Here, we use an app called WeChat for both locals and expats alike. Group chats are huge here, annoying, but huge. We create partie s together, sporting events together, or invite someone into the chat who may have been left out.”Ursula Lauriston is the Editor-in-Chief of Capitol Standard Magazine â€" DC’s fastest growing niche brand and lifestyle publication. Try This to Reach Your Full Potential - The Muse

Try This to Reach Your Full Potential - The Muse Try This to Reach Your Full Potential There are few things worse than being in a place where you feel stuck, complacent, stagnant; like you could be getting somewhere much better, much farther in your career, so much faster. And while some employers do invest in professional development and growth for employees, these opportunities can often feel like slow growth- a small improvement on your existing skill set by going to a conference, a new ability refined over the course of a year with the help of a mentor as you’re primed for a promotion. There’s nothing wrong with growing as you go. But if you’re ready to grow big, then we think it’s time to be proactive, to no longer rely on our employers to push us forward but to invest in growing our knowledge ourselves. The good news? There are plenty of online classes and in-person programs you can take that won’t interfere with your 9-to-5, but that can have a big impact on it. Here are four common reasons we tend to feel stuck, and in each case, how leveling up your skills can help you get out of a rut and closer to the future you imagine. You’re Not Doing the Work You’re Meant to Do This is an all-too-common feeling among professionals today: You know you’re unhappy with your current job, but you aren’t really sure what you want to be doing instead. While there are many ways to find your passions, diving deeper into little curiosities by taking classes related to them can open up your mind to possibilities and hopefully give you more clarity about what you do and don’t enjoy. Here’s one example: Apryl DeLancey, Founder and Data Scientist at ElPortoShark.com, credits General Assembly’s 12-week Data Science Immersive course with helping her find her way back to the work she loves: “I originally signed up for the Python class to refresh my programming skills. After then taking the Data Science class, I quickly remembered everything I had forgotten about (but loved) in grad school!” Her class project- a data research project on shark sightings- led to ElPortoShark.com, a departure from her work in marketing and her now full-time passion and profession. Even if taking a class doesn’t magically point you to your calling, it can still be a valuable learning experience. Like DeLancey, you may find that your renewed passion will lead to an entirely new career- or you may become very clear that you shouldn’t go down a path you were curious about. Engaging your brain in a new way could even help invigorate or pivot the work you’re currently doing. Explore topics that light you up, and see where it takes you. You’re Not Moving Up Quickly Enough If you love your job, you want to rise up through the ranks, and you need to show your boss what you’re capable of. Taking a course in a relevant subject matter is a great way to show off not just your additional skills, but also your dedication to your work. Of course, you should be strategic about your class choices. Consider what is required of the role you want to move into and focus your learning there. Will you need to learn more about data and analytics? There’s a course for that. Will you be speaking in front of bigger audiences? There’s one for that, too. Whether you need expertise in broad topics like management or communication or niche fields like user design and UX, there are myriad courses that can help you develop the necessary skills for the role you want. If you’re not sure what, exactly, you should focus on get to the next level, reach out to your network. Poll people who have jobs one to two steps ahead of yours (at your company or elsewhere) about what they’ve done to get ahead, then have a sit-down with your boss about your findings and your plan. At some companies, you may even be able to get your professional development paid for! Either way, share key learnings as you progress through your class and look for ways to demonstrate your new skills at every opportunity. You’re working hard to learn more- make sure to show it off! You’re Not Landing the Jobs You Want Much like with garnering a promotion, landing a brand-new job often means adding to the skills currently listed on your resume. Whether you’re trying to transition to an entirely new field or simply want a refresher on a topic you know and love, it’s worth looking at courses to help you build the skills you need to land the role of your dreams. Take a good look at the requirements of the job you want. Those bullet-pointed on the actual listing are helpful to review, but think outside of the box, too. What would be necessary to be exceptional in this role? What would you need to learn? What would help advance the goals of the company? Maybe you’re a marketer who knows your lack of data analysis chops is holding you back, or a graphic designer who wants to learn web design to start applying for different types of roles. If you’re having trouble figuring out what you need to get from your role to where you want to be, consider talking to a career coach or admissions consultant, who may be able to see the gaps you can’t. Then, find the courses that will help you grow in the specific skill sets this new job requires, do your best work possible, and find the right ways to use your newfound abilities to make your application shine. Yes, you should make sure to list these courses on your resume the right way and talk about them in your cover letter, but more than that you should look for tangible ways to show potential employers what you can do with your skills. For example, you could create a portfolio to show off the work you did in class or put your snazzy abilities into practice by doing a pre-interview project. You Just Need a Little Inspiration Pushing yourself to learn something new doesn’t always have to be tied to a specific professional goal. Given that there are courses on topics ranging from public speaking to podcasting to poetry, learning about something that’s interesting to you can help you grow not just as a professional, but as a person, too. “I’ve been wanting to take an improv class for 10 years, but had never found a three-hour intro class where I could get my feet wet,” says Yolanda Enoch, a digital photo organizer who signed up for just that at General Assembly. “It really changed how I interact with people and start conversations. It’s one of the most impactful things I have ever done to become more comfortable socially.” No matter why you’re feeling held back in your career, it’s worth taking steps to invest in your professional development. Start browsing classes online or in person to see if something out there sparks your curiosity. Look for a short-form workshop in your budget range, or start saving today so you can take your dream class in a few months. Or, if you can make a case that your continuing education will help your work, ask your company to pay for it. Whatever you do, start believing today that you deserve to not only pursue the work you love, but to pursue what you love to learn. You’ll grow and succeed personally and professionally in the process.

How to make your mark when you enter a team

How to make your mark when you enter a team How to make your mark when you enter a team For most of us, working on projects and deliverables by ourselves is becoming increasingly scarce.  We are constantly joining existing teams, forming new ones or otherwise meeting in groups.  In fact,  studies  of managers and knowledge workers reveal that they spend between 25%-80% of their time in meetings, suggesting that “teamwork” is a primary vehicle for the modern business today. And, meeting time has only  increased  since 2008.Because a group takes on the chemistry of its collective members, each one has its own dynamic and requires you to think differently.  What’s more, unlike the dreaded “leaderless” team â€" a common form of torture in  business school â€" most workplace teams have some kind of decision maker associated with them. That said, in every group setting you enter, you’re leaving an impression of yourself.  I’d even go so far as to say that  meetings  and group projects are part of  an ongoing audition for your job.   You’re training other people how to see and treat you. When you’re the new person on a team, it pays to have a strategy for how you’ll both assimilate  and  add value.Consider these strategies as you make your mark and take control of your impression in groups:Have a point of viewYes, this might sound obvious.   But, when you’re the new person in a group, many people tend to play it safe and behave more like a student or observer, than an engaged member.   In an interview I did on  next generation leadership  with Shannon Herzfeld, Vice President of Government Relations at  Archer Midland Daniels Company, Herzfeld recommended, “Ask the tough business questions.   Many younger women want to be helpful and nice rather than portraying themselves as someone who grows the bottom line.”   Make a critical comparison, highlight an industry trend or statistic, or inquire constructively about how a conclusion was reached.Make contact with the lead horseIf you want to be seen as a team member who has the teeth to handle tough problems, then don’t act overly deferential to your team’s leader.   When I wrote  Pushback, I asked  Marie Chandoha, President CEO of  Charles Schwab  Investment Management about this.   She noted, “I do a lot of work with horses and what I’ve learned is that in a herd, there’s always one dominant animal. I’ve noticed that a new horse will have a short interaction with the leader rather early on. That shows that the horse is assertive. It’s not a drawn out or continual interaction though; there isn’t a need to keep asserting power.”   Show faith in yourself by knowing you’re worthy to make contact with high-ranking individuals and mentors.   While being considerate of their time, ask them to expand on a topic they brought up or express your interest, experience or background in a key area.Assess the dynamics of the teamWhat you pay attention to on “Day 1” with a team is undoubtedly going to be different than where you focus your energy after “Year 1”. Early on, you should be balancing making a mark with absorbing  the culture of a group.  How do people communicate, make a point or disagree with each other?  How evenly to people share the speaking “platform”?   Once you’re a more established team member, think about - with intention - how you’re contributing to the team in terms of energy, mood, and outputs.  Aim high and be honest if you’re really executing on that vision.  Executive coach Ann Daly PhD recently wrote about the power of being intentional before a meeting and noted, “Early assertiveness becomes self-reinforcing within the group … Projecting confidence inspires confidence.”How you show up early on in a team situation  leaves a lasting impression with those around you. It’s not that you can’t sculpt your personal brand once you’ve joined a group, but life will be much easier if you can get it right from the beginning. How have you joined a group and made your mark?   Either the w rong way - or the right way?  This article appeared on Be Leaderly.
